Horizon 5-7 days (2026-10-30 through 2026-11-06)
Direction unchanged: bearish at medium confidence for a sixth consecutive brief (the prior five dated 2026-10-24 to 2026-10-28 at prices 80,029 to 81,274).
Primary driver
An unresolved exchange-counterparty shock landing on an already damaged trend. Price closed on the 30-day low, 4.94% below the 50-day average, with the Coinbase premium negative for 14 straight days (-8 to -18 bps), while the largest exchange has withdrawals paused. The nearest precedent in my general knowledge, the Bybit hack of 2025-02-21, saw BTC undercut the initial hack low over the following week rather than V-recover (tariff headlines contributed), and the current macro backdrop with a December hike priced above 90% offers no cushion.
Supporting signals
- Price 77,839 is the 30-day low and 4.94% below the 50-day MA (81,887); four of the five largest daily moves in the last 30 days were down days, including -4.32% on 2026-10-29.
- 25-delta put skew at the 30-day tenor is 0.0465 (97th percentile of its 30-day range) and at the 7-day tenor 0.0397 (also 97th percentile): downside protection is bid at both horizons.
- 7-day ATM IV exceeds 30-day IV by 3.1 vol points and 90-day sits fractionally below 30-day: the market is paying for near-term stress, not a one-day flush.
5 more
- Coinbase premium -11.38 bps today and between -8.18 and -17.69 bps on every one of the last 14 days: US spot demand has lagged offshore throughout the decline, including on the three ETF inflow days.
- aSOPR 0.969 (10th percentile) and SOPR 0.987 (10th percentile) show coins moving at a loss; short-term holder NUPL at 0.027 is one more bad day from negative, the point where that cohort has historically become a forced seller.
- Fed held at 3.75%-4.00% on 2026-10-28 with two hike dissents and a December hike priced above 90%; the 10-year at 4.99% keeps the carry cost of holding BTC high.
- Aggregate futures open interest fell to $53.45B, 4.5% below the 2026-10-21 peak of $55.95B, while the single large venue's open interest rose 2% to $6.79B: leverage is leaving the market overall even as positioning rebuilds at one venue, which with negative intraday funding fits shorts being added rather than dips being bought.
- In-window event risk is skewed to uncertainty: Deribit expiry 2026-10-30, ISM Manufacturing 2026-11-02, US midterms and JOLTS 2026-11-03, ADP, ISM Services and the Treasury refunding 2026-11-04, Nonfarm Payrolls 2026-11-06 on the last day of the window.
Contradicting signals
- The cycle monitor is NEUTRAL with 3 of 8 bottom triggers (NUPL LTH, Reserve Risk, aSOPR) and 0 of 8 top triggers; MVRV-Z at 0.77 (37th percentile) says this is not a cycle-top distribution.
- Long liquidations of $230M against $42M of shorts (ratio 0.18) at the 95th percentile of the 1-year liquidation distribution, with funding reported negative intraday, is the kind of flush that often precedes a 1-3 day bounce.
- Price remains 6.47% above the 200-day MA (73,107) and 24% above the 90-day low (62,773): the larger uptrend is intact.
5 more
- Spot ETFs printed three consecutive inflow days through 2026-10-28 ($423.6M) and the 30-day average of 1,123 BTC per day is still positive and above issuance; this is descriptive, not demonstrated alpha.
- Daily funding is neutral, not crowded: 9.04%/yr OI-weighted across venues and 9.68%/yr at the single major venue, both under the roughly 11%/yr exchange-default baseline, so there is no long-funding excess left to unwind.
- Binance has said it will cover all losses and the stablecoin issuers froze a large share of the stolen funds; if withdrawals reopen quickly the counterparty narrative deflates.
- Equities near highs (S&P 7,720, VIX 17.2), DXY down on the day and the 10-year back below 5% on 2026-10-29 are mild macro tailwinds.
- Fear & Greed at 51 and DVOL at the 51st percentile of its 1-year range mean neither sentiment nor implied vol is at a level where contrarian buying has historically been rewarded; this cuts both ways, no panic to fade and no panic yet to come.
Macro overlay
STRENGTHEN
macro reinforces what the local data already says
Local data alone could be read either way: a trend break versus a liquidation flush with 3 of 8 bottom triggers. Adding the macro and micro tape resolves it toward continuation: a Fed with a December hike priced above 90%, the 10-year at 4.99%, an unresolved withdrawal halt at the largest exchange, and a five-session calendar stacked with binary events (expiry, midterms, refunding, payrolls) make a V-recovery the lower-probability path.
Trend position
Below the 50-day MA (81,887) by 4.94%; above the 200-day MA (73,107) by 6.47%.
Derivatives
Funding
Neutral. Open-interest-weighted funding across venues is 0.0083% per 8 hours, about 9.0% annualized, and the single major venue prints 0.0088% per 8 hours, about 9.7% annualized. Both sit under the roughly 11%/yr exchange-default baseline, so longs were not paying up before the break and there is no crowded-long funding premium to unwind. The single venue runs 0.64 percentage points annualized above the aggregate, a small gap that points to modest extra long bias there, not a market-wide divergence. Over the last 14 days the venue average ranged from 0.0009% to 0.0100% per 8 hours (about 0.9% to 11% annualized), never hot. These are daily averages: the negative funding reported during the 2026-10-29 liquidation cascade was intraday and does not show in the daily print.
Positioning
Aggregate futures open interest across venues is $53.45B, down 1.3% on the day and 4.5% below the 2026-10-21 peak of $55.95B, so the market is deleveraging into the decline. The single large venue's open interest moved the other way, rising 2% to $6.79B, its highest since 2026-10-21, consistent with new positions, likely shorts given the price action and negative intraday funding, being opened there. Options open interest is $40.06B with about 35% of Deribit's BTC book settling at the 2026-10-30 08:00 UTC expiry against reported max pain of 78,000 to 79,000; once that gamma rolls off the pin near 77,000 weakens. Put skew at the 97th percentile at both 7-day and 30-day tenors and a 30-day ATM IV of 36.9% (79th percentile of the last 90 days) complete a fear-priced, de-risking picture rather than a bottom-fishing one.
Liquidations
A one-sided long flush: $230M of longs versus $42M of shorts liquidated on 2026-10-29, a 0.18 short-to-long ratio, with total liquidations at the 95th percentile of the past year. It is the third long-skewed liquidation day in eight sessions (2026-10-22 $81M longs, 2026-10-24 $120M longs), so leverage has been bleeding out in steps rather than in one capitulation. Industry-wide the day saw $1.1B to $1.5B liquidated with BTC the largest single share near $475M. That removes forced sellers, but it is also the third time in two weeks the pattern has repeated without producing a durable low.
Regional flow
Coinbase premium is -11.38 bps, past the -10 bps practical extreme, and the 14-day series has been negative every day, ranging from -8.18 bps (2026-10-22) to -17.69 bps (2026-10-27). That is a persistent offshore-led tape: US spot, the channel historically associated with ETF and institutional accumulation, has not bid above the offshore price for two weeks even on the three ETF inflow days. The narrowing from -17.69 to -11.38 bps over the last two sessions is the only soft positive; it would need to cross above zero to signal US demand returning.
Macro & flows
Macro–BTC alignment
ALIGNED on the dominant macro variable. A Fed priced to hike in December with the 10-year near 5% pushes the same way as the local trend break, the 97th-percentile put skew and the offshore-led selling. Equities near highs and a soft dollar do not confirm risk-off, which means the selloff is crypto-specific rather than macro-driven, but nothing in the macro tape argues for buying it.
BTC micro
The dominant narrative is the 2026-10-29 Binance incident: an estimated $2B to $3.5B drained from Ethereum hot wallets via an EIP-7702 delegation, deposits and withdrawals paused, Tether and Circle freezing a large share of the proceeds, and Binance pledging to cover losses. BTC fell below 78,000 during the event and derivatives saw $1.1B to $1.5B of liquidations with roughly $475M in BTC, mostly longs. Spot ETF flows were a modest offset: +$137.3M on 2026-10-28 (about $136M of it IBIT), a third straight inflow day totalling $423.6M since 2026-10-26, against $773.5M of outflows on 2026-10-22 and 10-23; the latest dataset row is near flat at about 56 BTC and the 30-day average of 1,123 BTC per day is roughly 2.5 times daily issuance. The 2026-10-30 08:00 UTC Deribit expiry settles about 35% of BTC options open interest ($11B to $12B notional) with max pain reported at 78,000 to 79,000. Strategy (MSTR) reporting record Q3 operating income and 848,517 BTC held, and ICE's planned regulated US perpetuals venue, are supportive medium-term headlines that do not change next week's tape. Miner economics are unremarkable: hash ribbons ratio 1.027 (no capitulation), Puell multiple 0.96 (41st percentile), with MARA (2026-11-03), RIOT and Hut 8 (2026-11-04) reporting on negative EPS consensus.
Fed
hawkish. The FOMC held the target range at 3.75%-4.00% on 2026-10-28 (fed funds lower bound 3.75%) in a 10-2 vote with both dissents, Cook and Hammack, favouring a quarter-point hike, and rate markets now price a December increase above 90%. The 10-year is 4.99%, versus 5.00% the prior day and 5.19% on 2026-10-16, so still pinned near 5%. M2 growth of 5.71% year on year is the one liquidity offset. Fear & Greed at 51 (Neutral) says crypto sentiment has not washed out despite the price break. The next CPI (2026-11-10) and the December FOMC (2026-12-08 to 12-09) fall after this brief's window and are later context, not in-window catalysts.
Rates & credit
10-year at 4.99%, down 7 bp on 2026-10-29 and back under 5% after sitting at 5.09% to 5.19% from 2026-10-16 to 2026-10-23. Direction over 14 days is lower; level is still restrictive for a non-yielding asset. There is no credit-spread feed in this context, so no credit read is offered.
Dollar
DXY 101.73, flat over 14 days (range 101.62 on 2026-10-25 to 102.40 on 2026-10-27) and down on 2026-10-29. The dollar is not driving this move in either direction. A soft dollar is mild background support for BTC, but it has not translated into US-side spot demand: the Coinbase premium has been negative on all 14 days of the history.
Equities
Risk-on but narrowing. The S&P 500 at 7,720 is within 0.5% of its 14-day high (7,757 on 2026-10-21) and VIX 17.2 is calm. Big-tech dispersion on 2026-10-29 (Alphabet's slowest search growth in five quarters against $51.4B capex, Amazon and Intel falling after hours on guidance) is a wobble, not a regime break. Equities are not confirming BTC's selloff; the BTC move is idiosyncratic.
Risks
Drawdown risk
Model opinion, not measured probabilities. The first downside level is the 60-day low at 75,590, which coincides with the short-term holder cost basis implied by MVRV-STH of 1.028 (about 75,700); I put a test of that zone inside the window at somewhat better than even odds, given that 7-day skew and IV are already paying for it and the one-day straddle lower bound is 75,050. Below that, the 200-day MA at 73,107 and the 7-day straddle low at 73,160 define the next shelf; reaching it requires the short-term holder cohort to flip into net loss (NUPL-STH is 0.027, so a further 2-3% decline does it) and I give that roughly one in three. A daily close under the 200-day MA within the window is a tail, perhaps one in eight, and would need the Binance situation to escalate (withdrawals not restored, evidence of a solvency hole) or a hawkish payrolls print on 2026-11-06. The 90-day low of 62,773 is not in play on this horizon. Upside tail: a reclaim of 81,887 inside the window is the invalidation, roughly one in four.
Vol regime
moderate, rising. DVOL closed at 41.99, the 51st percentile of its 1-year range, so implied vol is mid-range for BTC, not stressed; 30-day ATM IV of 36.9% is at the 79th percentile of the last 90 days and eased 0.7 vol points over five days. Realized vol has turned up: 7-day 33.3% versus 30-day 29.1%, still under the 90-day 38.4%. The options market's own forecast of travel: the at-the-money straddle prices a move of about plus or minus 2.5% (75,050 to 78,950) by the 2026-10-31 expiry, about plus or minus 5.0% (73,160 to 80,840) by 2026-11-06, and about plus or minus 6.3% (72,160 to 81,840) by 2026-11-13. These are ranges, not directions; the 7-day lower bound sits almost exactly on the 200-day MA.
What changed vs yesterday
Direction unchanged: bearish at medium confidence for a sixth consecutive brief (the prior five dated 2026-10-24 to 2026-10-28 at prices 80,029 to 81,274). Price fell 4.2% from the 2026-10-28 brief level of 81,274 to 77,839, a new 30-day low, and the thesis moved from a slow fade below the 50-day MA to an event-driven break: the 2026-10-29 Binance hot-wallet hack and withdrawal halt, liquidations at the 95th percentile of the year, put skew jumping to the 97th percentile at both 7-day and 30-day tenors, and 7-day IV moving above 30-day IV. The macro overlay also hardened: the 2026-10-28 FOMC hold came with two hike dissents and a December hike now priced above 90%, partly offset by the 10-year slipping back under 5% and three days of ETF inflows totalling $423.6M. Confidence stays at medium rather than rising because the liquidation flush and 3 of 8 bottom triggers now give a real bounce case that did not exist a week ago. Prior briefs remain unvalidated forecasts; the 2026-10-29 drop does not confirm their reasoning.
